"Tubbing" a Roof

Altamont firefighters recently continued their vehicle extrication training.  A mock vehicle accident was constructed with a vehicle on its roof, on an embankment.  The Altamont used its stabilization jacks and hydraulic tools to raise the vehicle, remove the roof, and slide it from under the car.

Training Report

Topic:  Using Stabilization Jacks to Free a Person Trapped Under a Vehicle

Summary:  We used the two jacks to raise the rear end of a Jeep Cherokee (almost a foot off the ground) simulating the rescue of a person trapped underneath.  The scenario went very well and quick.  We placed the jacks on the D post and raised them simultaneously.

Lessons Learned:

1.       We used the straps to tie the jacks together and tie them to the vehicle.  We may have been working against ourselves due to the strap on the vehicle.  We will need to practice this more and come up with other methods.

2.       Chock the front wheels!  The car may coast forward when the rear end is lifted.

3.       Crib while you go.  As 2 firefighters are lifting the car with the jacks, others should be using box cribbing or the strut to stabilize the vehicle in case of a failure of a jack.

Topic:  Cutting Hinges using new Hurst Cutters

Summary:  We had a difficult time cutting door hinges on a Jeep Cherokee using the new cutters.    The cutters seemed to stall while cutting and did not go through on the first attempt.

Update:  A technician from Hurst serviced our new hydraulic pump and corrected the problem.

Lessons Learned:

1.       The hinges were successfully cut when they were placed deep within the blades.  Using the tips of the blades seemed to have less power.

2.       Always have a PLAN B.  We could have used the spreaders/combi tool to pop the hinges.  We also switched to the portable unit to make sure our trimo pump was working.

3.       Familiarize yourself with the new tools and pumps.  The better you know your tools, the quicker we can be.

Below are photos of cuts made after the trimo pump was repaired.
